Introduction to Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR, this therapeutic approach is designed to help you process and overcome traumatic experiences, unlocking a path to a more balanced and fulfilling life.
Initially developed to address trauma, EMDR has proven effective for a wide range of mental health challenges.
EMDR is built on the understanding that distressing memories can trigger unhelpful thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.
These often stem from memories that haven't been fully processed. By targeting specific traumatic memories and the negative beliefs tied to them, EMDR reduces their emotional impact and reshapes them into healthier, adaptive recollections.
How Does EMDR Work?
EMDR therapy uses a structured approach that includes eye movements and other forms of rhythmic bilateral (left-right) stimulation, such as tones or taps.
When you focus on a traumatic memory while experiencing this bilateral stimulation (BLS), the intensity and emotional weight of the memory decrease. Over time, these memories feel more distant and less intrusive.
Core Principles of EMDR

When distressing memories are triggered, they bring back the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations from the original event, causing ongoing distress.
According to the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, these symptoms arise because the memories were not fully processed at the time. While there can be other contributing factors, such as physical or chemical influences, unprocessed memories play a significant role.
Who can benefit from EMDR?
While EMDR is conditionally recommended by the NICE Guidelines for treating PTSD along with CBT, recent research shows it offers significant benefits for a variety of mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety, across all age groups.
Differently from trauma informed CBT, during EMDR you will not need to schedule tasks within each session.
What to Expect in Your First EMDR Sessions
Your journey begins with an assessment session to determine if EMDR is right for you. The initial EMDR session, called "History-taking," involves an exploration of your personal history. Together, you and your therapist will identify treatment targets, which include past traumatic memories, current triggers, and future goals.
If you are in immediate danger or experiencing active abuse, the primary focus will be on establishing safety before addressing trauma-related symptoms with EMDR.
What Happens During EMDR Sessions
EMDR therapy is typically conducted once or twice a week. In the preparation phase, building trust and readiness is essential. You will learn stabilization techniques to manage emotions, and you can practice these techniques outside of sessions to enhance their effectiveness.

During the target assessment phase, we will identify the key memory that holds the potential for healing, and a treatment plan will be created and agreed upon.
Memory processing involves using bilateral stimulation to revisit the traumatic memory. You will be guided guide through this process, helping to transform the past image into a neutral recollection. This phase may span several sessions, allowing for a thorough exploration of your experiences.
As the distress diminishes, the evaluation phase allows you to discuss your progress and decide on the next steps, whether targeting new memories or concluding therapy.
Pros and Cons of EMDR
EMDR therapy offers the advantage of processing of traumatic memories without the need for detailed discussions of distressing events or homework between sessions. By utilizing the brain's natural healing processes, EMDR brings quick improvements in various life areas.
However, it is important to note that the process can evoke intense emotions and disturbing thoughts during sessions, and it may not be suitable for everyone.
